Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.
Proverbs 10:2

There are many ways to illegitimately get rich. Gambling, fraud, exploitation are some ways. But Solomon isn’t giving his son some get rich quick advice. He’s telling him that such treasures have no lasting value.

As Jesus said, what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul. There’s not much point being the richest, most powerful man in the world if your heart is set at enmity with the judge of all the earth.

70 years, or however long we might have to enjoy money, are nothing compared to the eternity we will face in the presence of either God’s wrath or favour. If our hearts are wicked before a holy God, no amount of money will buy us into heaven.

But righteousness delivers from death. Not our own righteousness, which is like filthy rags, but the righteousness of Christ. He’s the only perfect man who’s goodness needs to be credited to our account. Just as God delivered him from death, so can he deliver us.

“Heavenly Father, help me to be honest in my dealings with money. Above all please deliver me from death and make me righteous please. In Jesus’ name, amen”
